Hiring for Awesome: 3 Tips to Improve Your Hiring Process


Hiring new talent can be a challenging process, but is an inevitable and crucial part of running a business. Hiring the wrong employee can be expensive, time-consuming, and costly to your work environment, therefore you want to have a good process in place to avoid a bad hire when you can. Setting up a process is more than just reviewing resumes and conducting interviews. It will take a little upfront time and effort, but in the long-run well worth it to define how to hire for awesome. While there is no way to 100% prevent making a bad hire, follow these tips to ease the process and encourage only the best applicants:


Know What You Want + Write an Accurate Job Description


Hiring the right employee, starts well before people even begin applying; it starts with knowing what you want and articulating it correctly in the job description. Many companies use generic job descriptions that list out responsibilities and requirements, without thinking about the person they want in the role. To write a description that attracts the right people, start by conducting a job analysis that collects information about the responsibilities, necessary skills, desired performance outcomes, and work environment of the particular job. This covers what you (the hiring manager) expect from the candidate. Next, think about including what benefits the company can bring to potential candidates. You’ll attract motivated candidates that better fit exactly the type of person you’re looking for.


Don’t Ignore Culture Fit


Culture fit is more important than you might think, and should always be a consideration when hiring. Good company culture doesn’t just result in a workforce that enjoys hanging out with each other, but also increased talent, higher retention, increased efficiency and more innovative ideas. As a leader, it’s important to understand you play a vital role in molding the company’s culture with each hire. Consider preferences for the types of people you employ to foster a happy and more productive environment.


Include a Panel Style Interview


There are multiple types of interview styles out there, with different kinds of environment settings and tactics, all of which can be great at evaluating candidates. If the position you’re hiring for will be interacting with multiple people and departments, conducting a panel style interview is most effective. This will allow all department heads to hear the same questions/answers from the candidate and provide feedback from their own perspective on the same interaction. This style of interviewing allows a company to practice more objectivity when selecting a candidate and can be less time-consuming for staff.


There are many tactics and strategies to consider when developing a hiring process, the most important is that you have a process in place and that it’s always evolving for the better.
